The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society will host its annual fall luncheon at the Captain’s Table restaurant beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 21. The luncheon will include society business, the presentation of an award to Allen Walker for the preservation of his residence at 85 Sussex St. and speaker Mike Dixon, a historian who specializes in research on the railroad on Delmarva.
The railroad was once an important link to the outside world for many Delawareans, and the local depot was the center of the community, a place to catch a train and learn the news of the day. As tracks spread downstate, growth followed the lines. Dixon will present a slide-illustrated program that traces the social history of trains in the First State from the beginning of the railroad age to the present.
Dixon is a historian and writer whose research focuses on the Mid-Atlantic’s regional and local history. For more than three decades, he has worked extensively to encourage public interest and participation in the preservation of the area’s past and to create understanding between earlier eras and the present. He has appeared on the “Today Show,” Maryland Public Television and TV news programs and in National Geographic, Southern Living and Chesapeake Life.
His published works have appeared in Chesapeake Life, Delmarva Quarterly, Maryland Life and a number of other magazines, newspapers and historical society journals. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware, Wesley College and Cecil College, and he is a visiting scholar for the Delaware Humanities Forum and Delmarva Discussions, and a member of the speakers’ bureau for the Maryland Humanities Council.
The Captain’s Table is on Route 1 at James Street north of Dewey Beach. The menu for the luncheon includes a choice of chicken cordon bleu, crab cake or prime rib. The cost is $25 for society members and $30 for nonmembers. Call 302-227-7310 to make a prepaid reservation and a menu selection.
