My Family Resource Center in West Rehoboth is gearing up to start its first after-school program for students ages 8 to 18, hopefully in early December.
The center was co-founded by Bishop Wayne Foster and his wife, Christine, last year as a way to reach out to the children of West Rehoboth and Burton Village.
“There’s a lot of children out here that are kind of wayward; they don’t really have a lot of places to go,” Christine Foster said. “This is a small start but the vision we have is greater.”
The after-school program will run three days a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – from 3 to 6 p.m. and is free to the public. The program will allow kids to do their homework, as well as work at stations emphasizing arts and crafts, games and computer skills. Students will rotate stations throughout the day, Foster said. A meal will also be provided.
“The program is mainly geared towards men. We’re trying to get young males off the streets,” she said. “Our goal is to get about 15 of them and then we are open to girls also.”
Foster said prospective students are able to register now and parents are also encouraged to be active members of the program.
She said every month the center would provide adults with a discussion on parenting skills, budgeting and finances. In addition, once the computers are set up for it, the center is also hoping to provide a GED program for adults, Foster said.
Besides the after-school program, the center is also looking to start a distance learning program as well as a daycare in the future, Foster said.
Other future goals, she said, include a recreational center that will allow kids to go inside for recreational and educational activities.
There is also a sister site in Milford at the Bethel AME Community Center that operates on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m.
