Elks Hoop Shoot competition set Jan. 17
The Cape Henlopen Lodge No. 2540 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will hold the local tournament of the Elks National Hoop Shoot competition at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 17, in the gym of the Eagle’s Nest Christian Academy east of Milton which has generously donated its facility for the event.

The Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest is the largest and most visible of the many youth activities sponsored by the Elks. More than 3 million boys and girls ages 8-13 will participate this year.

The Elks Hoop Shoot highlights the Elks’ commitment to America’s youth.

From the millions of youngsters who participate and advance through local, district, state and regional competition, six national champions are named - one boy and one girl in each of three categories: ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Contest age group will be determined by their age as of April 1, 2010.

The area winners each receive a trophy and will attend a luncheon in their honor Sunday, Jan. 24. The national winners will have their names inscribed on a plaque at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Parents accompany contestants throughout the competition.

Ryan Thornburg of the Sussex Family YMCA basketball league went to the state competition two years ago, and Charlotte Mendenhall of Lewes won the national championship for the 10-11 age division in 1980.

For additional information, call Phil Mandel, tournament coordinator, at 302-645-1543, or George Horneck at 645-8463.
