Legal studies program wins ABA approval
After an in-depth evaluation, Wilmington University’s legal studies program was recently granted approval by the American Bar Association. The program was found to provide a quality paralegal education and also satisfied the stringent requirements set forth by the association’s Standing Committee on Paralegals.

During the approval process, the program underwent rigorous scrutiny of every facet of its makeup. The American Bar Association (ABA) approved the curriculum, faculty, recruiting and admission practices, library and computer resources, and student services inherent in the program.

“I appreciate the thorough evaluation done by the American Bar Association,” said Amy O’Dell, Esq., program coordinator for legal studies, “This approval validates the time, energy and effort that our faculty and advisory board have put into creating a quality program for our students.”

Wilmington University began offering a bachelor of science in legal studies program in the fall of 2003. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to become paralegals or legal assistants working under the supervision of an attorney or to continue their studies in law. Courses include such topics as legal writing, criminal law, civil procedure and LSAT preparation, among others. The legal studies degree can be completed at Wilmington University’s New Castle and Dover locations. The university also offers a 24-credit post-baccalaureate certificate in legal studies.

The ABA approval is also great news for current students in the legal studies program. “I’m very excited about this approval,” said O’Dell.

“We hope this will help generate new professional development opportunities for our students through the Delaware Paralegal Association as well as expand their employment options nationwide.”
