The General Federation of Women’s Clubs Federation Guild held a clothing drive Nov. 1, in Milford and Dover for the benefit of the People’s Place SAFE shelters in Kent and Sussex counties.
The Federation Guild with the generosity of the community and many civic groups collected over 5,886 pounds of clothing valued at a conservative estimate of $17,658. Along with the staff at People’s Place, 13 General Federation clubs in both Kent and Sussex counties participated in the drive, donating approximately 477 volunteer hours and 3,471 pounds of clothing toward the drive.
The Federation Guild thanks the community in general as well as the People’s Place staff under the direction of Marcey Rezac, SAFE program director at People’s Place. Bob Hartley, general manager of the MainStay Hotel and his staff, along with the staff at God’s Way in Milford donated a generous contribution of time, hands-on work, planning and venue. Without their help this drive would not have been possible.
The People’s Place administration, staff and board of directors thank the Federation Guild for its continued support. The clothing drive will make a big difference in the lives of many women and their children. The three People’s Place SAFE shelters, two in Kent County and one in Sussex County, provide a safe environment, shelter and support for women and their children in domestic violence situations.
Their 24-hour hotline is available at 422-8058 in Kent and Sussex counties or 302-678-3886 in northern Kent County. Advocacy and case management are also provided, which helps families to establish a new safe home environment on their own with improved skills and resources.
Anyone wishing to help People’s Place SAFE shelters residents during the holidays or anytime throughout the year can call 422-8058 or 422-8033, Ext. 183. Need and wish lists are available, especially for the children. People’s Place is a full member of United Way of Delaware. The agency depends on grants and fundraisers as well as the generosity of the residents of the communities it serves.
