Sussex Ballet to present annual
‘Nutcracker’ at new Cape theater
Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite” has been playing every weekend at Sussex Dance Academy since September, as the students and adult volunteers have been preparing for Sussex Ballet’s upcoming performance.

“As a small child, my parents took me to see The Nutcracker and I fell in love with it,” said Kate Walker, artistic director.

Walker said the most rewarding part of her production is when young children come back stage after the performance to meet the Sugar Plum Fairy or to learn how it snowed on the stage.

“It’s magical…and I’m very happy that we have our own local children dancing right here in their hometown.”

Sussex Ballet’s Nutcracker has been performed at Cape Henlopen High School since 2004.

Walker, a Cape graduate, danced as a child in Dover, where she performed in “The Nutcracker.” Recalling the long trips to Dover, day after day, she’s glad that she can bring the performance a little closer to home.

“Cape’s new theater is more dancer-friendly and we’re grateful that the school has been made available to us, year after year,” said Walker.

Next year, Sussex Ballet will also offer school performances to the Cape district schools as well.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4-5 and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6 at Cape Henlopen High School’s theatre. Tickets are $16 for adults and $12 for seniors and children 12 and under. Tickets may be reserved by calling 302-645-7855, and are also available at the door.

Appearing with the cast will be guest artist Alex Bucker from the First State Ballet Theatre in Wilmington.
