Beebe Medical Center has expanded the information included in its outpatient diabetes education program offered through the Beebe Diabetes Management Department located at Beebe Long Neck Health Center, 32060 Long Neck Road, Millsboro.
A new session on meal planning for people with diabetes is being offered. Although there is a chapter on meal planning in the center’s eight-hour group diabetes-education session, many attendees have requested additional information.
A second new session being offered is on celiac disease, a condition triggered by consumption of the protein gluten found in such foods as bread, pasta and baked goods.
The diabetes education sessions are by physicians’ orders. The Diabetes Management Department also offers a diabetes-prevention course that does not need a physician’s order. It costs $30 a person and is geared to those individuals who are at high risk for developing diabetes. Beebe Medical Center does not bill insurance for the prevention course, but it does bill insurance for the others.
Beebe’s Diabetes Management Department offers educational and management services for people with diabetes. Diabetes educational programs are offered three times each month for people newly diagnosed and those who need a refresher course for managing their diseases.
An eight-hour diabetes self-management education series is presented as three sessions, at various times, on a rotating basis. Individual sessions are available for those with special needs.
Additionally, several diabetes and nutrition specialty sessions, such as diabetes in pregnancy and insulin-pump education are offered.
All provide the American Diabetes Association standard curriculum for healthy eating, increasing activity, monitoring blood glucose, taking medications, healthy coping, problem solving and preventing complications.
Education is also offered in Spanish. Certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians provide all education.
