Early this morning, state employees armed with heavy equipment were at the Route 1 property of a Lewes pediatrician charged with abusing numerous patients.
"We're taking down everything that is offensive from the highway," said Deputy Attorney General Patty Dailey Lewis, as a rhinoceros cartoon character standing near the entrance to the Bradley practice was removed.
Dr. Earl Bradley is in prison facing charges of raping and abusing children, crimes alleged to have taken place at his BayBees office complex, which over the years has been decorated with a miniature Ferris wheel, a carousel and brightly painted cars and fantasy items. A Delaware Department of Transportation bucket truck was brought to the scene to take down a large BayBees billboard visible from the northbound lanes of Route 1 and to remove a metal sculpture of children at play from the roof of the main building. At the same time, equipment commandeered by the Attorney General’s Office pushed snow in front of an outbuilding to block views of more fantasy items stacked on its porch.
"We've been working six to eight weeks to get this done," said Dailey Lewis, who called the action “neutralizing” the site.
"We got the word yesterday that an agreement had been reached to allow us to move ahead with this, and within a half hour, we were on our way to Lewes to get started."
Deputy Attorney General Dan Logan climbed up on the roof in the first light of this morning to tip the metal sculpture off the peak of the building as Dailey Lewis watched from below. Later in the morning the DelDOT vehicle raised its bucket truck to remove the sculpture entirely. "We know all of these items are offensive to the community," she said. "The attorney general has been very eager to get this resolved."
