The Cape Henlopen High School class of 1974 recently held a 35th class reunion. After not having met for 15 years, the class began by entering a float in this year’s Homecoming Parade, followed by a three-day weekend of events.
The reunion weekend began with a social gathering Friday, Jan. 22, on the second floor of JD Shuckers Restaurant at Peddlers Village on Route 24. One classmate who could not attend the remainder of the weekend activities came all the way from Atlanta just to attend this one-night gathering, and attendance was so high that the floor of the building was actually bending.
The class met for a dinner/dance Saturday, Jan. 23, in the banquet room of Irish Eyes Restaurant beside the canal in Lewes. Prior to this event classmates had sent in pictures of their school-age days (annual pictures, senior trip, class plays, etc.), which were projected with a PowerPoint presentation up on a wall throughout the evening’s activities, which included a skit of “Guitarzan” by two classmates.
Classmates had also sent in a paragraph about their milestones throughout the past 35 years, and each classmate who attended received a free DVD containing classmate contact information, classmate milestones and pictures used in the presentation. The Saturday night dinner/dance was attended by approximately 150 people.
The class met Sunday, Jan. 23, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Milton for a memorial to those mates no longer living, and the schedule was finalized with a wrap-up social gathering at Grotto’s Grand Slam Restaurant located near Five Points.
Classmates came from all directions in order to attend, not only from towns throughout Delaware, but also such places as New England, Chicago, D.C., Texas, Atlanta and Florida.
Almost every event was attended by classmates whose schedules prevented them from attending the remainder of the events, therefore the actual total turnout remains undetermined but was undoubtedly high.
Rather than each classmate receiving the customary group shot picture, participants are forwarding the pictures they took to a central location where everyone’s pictures are being downloaded onto one DVD.
In this manner each participant will receive a second DVD containing everyone’s pictures taken throughout the gala.
Several teachers in attendance indicated they had been to many class reunions, but none done quite to this standard.
