The Cape Henlopen Vikings are a dangerous basketball team. Each game plays like a “Mission Impossible” episode. The Vikings can erupt or self-destruct - quarter by quarter - inside the same game.
Milford, coached by former Cape player B.J. Joseph of Rehoboth Beach, can get out and run the floor like nobody’s business and they can shoot the three ball. By halftime their whirlwind offense threatened to blow Cape out of its own building as the Bucs led 44-29. Colby Shorts had 16 and Marques Jones netted 13 first-half points.
And then, in the third quarter, Cape snapped for a 28-19 run and trailed by only 63-58 with a quarter to play.
“We have been having bad third quarters a lot this season and that’s something we have to improve upon,” said Marques Jones, who scored 27 points in the game as Milford ran away for an 87-74 victory.
The loss dropped Cape to 7-7, which puts the team on the parking lot snowdrift and in danger of not making the state tournament.
“We got caught in the up and down matador defense in that third quarter,” said Joseph after the game. “I told our guys you can play fast but you can’t forget to defend.”
Trent Batson had 12 third-quarter points and finished with 23 for the game. Jaron Dukes came off the bench to score 13 while Jack McPike contributed 10 including three from beyond the arc.
Josh Hackney, who started in the ball game, had his best offensive effort with eight points.
The Vikings have games remaining at Polytech and Sussex Tech then at home against Tatnall and Sussex Central before closing on the road at Caravel and Caesar Rodney.
Milford is 10-4 overall and has dropped conference games to Smyrna and Caesar Rodney. The Bucs close out the season hosting CR and on the road at Dover. If Milford wins, it can win the Northern Division.
