| Brian Donahue will take the helm at Cape Henlopen High School next year, replacing John Yore as principal..
The Cape Henlopen school board announced the reassignment during a Thursday, Feb. 25 meeting. Yore will stay at Cape, stepping down to become assistant principal of student services and student activities.
The board voted to approve the reassignments exactly a month after Yore announced he would be reassigned as of on July 1. Since then, passions have flared among district parents and students. Some begged the board to retain Yore as principal; others accused the board of of settling scores.
Parents and students attended the meeting, bearing yellow “FOR YORE” signs that have marked the past two board meetings. Some shook their heads and left in dismay. Others shouted the board was not listening to their concerns. One voice shouted for everyone to stand up and raise their signs; those who weren’t already out the door responded in kind.
Yore replaces Mike Dmiterchick, who will fill Donahue’s vacancy as principal of Mariner Middle School in Milton. As parents and students filtered out of the meeting, Yore slipped in and shook Dmiterchick’s hand in congratulations.
The board has declined to comment on Yore’s reassignment since the former principal’s announcement, saying personnel discussions are confined to executive session. Given the public interest in Yore’s reassignment, the board decided to vote on the administrative shuffle outside of executive session. All voted in favor of the reassignments except board member Noble Prettyman, who voted no to the reassignment of Yore and Dmiterchick.
