For the first time ever, Clear Space Productions actors will perform collaboratively alongside the students of the Theatre Arts Academy of Cape Henlopen High School in their upcoming production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” starring Clear Space Executive Director Ken Skrzesz as Tevye.
The collaboration between the high school students and the professional actors of the Clear Space Theatre Company is proving to be an overwhelmingly positive experience for both the students and adults of the program. Caitlin Wood, a student of the Theatre Arts Academy, said, “To be able to work with more experienced adults and learn from their professional work is a one-of-a-kind experience.” Ashley O’Donnell, who portrays Hodel, Tevye’s daughter, said, “Ken brings such a phenomenal energy to the rehearsal process. It pushes me to new levels and makes me want to work so much harder. Connecting with him onstage is just amazing.”
All 15 students in the show have the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside professional actors such as Skrzesz.
This beloved family musical tells the story of Tevye and his family as they endeavor to cling to their traditions despite outside influences. Tevye’s daughters are portrayed by Katharine Ariyan (Tzeitel), Ashley O’Donnell (Hodel) and McKinnon de Kuyper (Chava) of the Theatre Arts Academy Program. Students Ryder Willis (Motel), Hunter Graves (Perchik) and Triever Sherwood (Fyedka) of the Cape theatre program are also featured in the production.
“I cannot believe how strong the roots of this show are,” said Ariyan, who plays Tevye’s eldest daughter. “When rehearsal is finished, I just want to run outside and connect to everything – make everything ‘of the earth.’”
O’Donnell added, “The connections that we establish with each other during rehearsal are different than anything I have ever felt before. Every time you touch someone’s hand or look into someone else’s eyes, you create this immediate spark … it’s the energy created by the actual content of the show.”
