When Pat Brown and Tracey Fazio moved to Bayside, the couple needed a picnic table and began searching for one. Brown, a former employee of King Tables, a Pennsylvania company in the heart of Amish country, could not find what he was looking for.
With more residents moving to the Long Neck area, Brown thought to offer the Amish-built, outdoor furniture in Sussex County.
Brown installed an Amish-built mailbox kiosk at the end of the couple’s driveway, and soon people starting asking where he bought it, which finalized the couple’s notion to open a store.
“We jokingly said we’ll take the tables and sell them down there,” said Brown. At the time, he didn’t realize his idea would become Indian River Accents on Long Neck Road near Millsboro.
In November, Brown and Fazio opened Indian River Accents, featuring wooden King Tables furniture, freestanding swings, Adirondack rocking chairs and gliders and octagonal tables.
“The Amish have a real cottage industry,” said Brown.
A double swing is priced at $700, and a lighthouse-style coffee table sells for $515, but less expensive items are also hot sellers, said Fazio. Bar tables and stools, pub tables and swings are popular, said Brown. Welcome signs and birdhouses sell for $10 to $15.
Customers also snatch up wooden buoys for lawn decorations, said Fazio. “It’s an ebb and flow of people who come in here,” said Brown. “Every time someone comes in here, they end up liking something different than what they originally stopped in for,” said Fazio.
Also popular are lighthouses, some that reach 12 feet tall. Some lighthouses are solar-powered and others are traditionally lit. A lighthouse made in the style of the Cape Henlopen lighthouse was recently commissioned and produced.
When nearby Kulp’s food store went out of business, the couple decided to help their neighbors. Inside the store, customers can also buy dry goods, cheeses and Lebanon bologna from Pennsylvania-based John F. Martin & Sons Inc.
Customers who want specially made pieces are encouraged to put their ideas on paper; the pair can also bulk order picnic tables for campgrounds and other organizations. Many residents know the new business by its landmark: an oversized beach chair outside the store.
