The Milton Historical Society is seeking both new and longtime residents of the region to serve as volunteers at its Lydia Black Cannon Museum in historic downtown Milton.
The first in a series of volunteer information and training sessions will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 13.
The museum’s greatest need is for docents. Docents are the hosts at the museum, welcoming visitors and acting as guides and interpreters of the exhibit.
Docents are essential to the museum’s operation; without docents the museum couldn’t be open on a regular basis.
The museum is looking for outgoing individuals who love learning and sharing for this important volunteer position.
Other volunteer needs include assistance at special events, fundraising committee members, collections and archival cataloguing (must be proficient with computers), gift shop sales, and building and landscape maintenance.
The volunteer training program is a great way to learn about the fascinating history of the area and meet other individuals with similar interests.
Docents and volunteers are required to attend three out of four training sessions and commit themselves to a minimum of 2 1/2 hours volunteer time per month between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In addition, they will attend two continuing education events per year and volunteer for a minimum of 2 1/2 hours per quarter in the off seasons.
A total of four training sessions will be held.
The other sessions will be held on Saturdays, March 27, April 10 and April 24. All session will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude by noon.
The museum is located at 210 Union St. in downtown Milton. For more information or to sign up for training, call 302-684-1010.
