Two Rehoboth women
robbed after visiting casino
Arrested man linked to similar crime
Delaware State Police have arrested a Dover man in connection with a robbery of two women near their home in Rehoboth Beach Yacht & Country Club.
Police urge gamblers to be aware of surroundings
Crimes in which criminals monitor gamblers to determine whether they would make good targets are not especially common, but local detectives say they have seen an increase in that type of case in the last several years.

“It’s a relatively new type of crime in Delaware, so we don’t have a system for gathering data yet,” said Det. John Messick of the Delaware State Police Major Crimes Unit in Sussex County. He said he knows of one case upstate last year and another in Sussex a couple of years ago. “The suspect robbed her of her credit cards and her gambling winnings.”

He said people should take precautions to avoid becoming victims. Most important, he said, is gamblers should be constantly aware of their surroundings while they are in the gambling venues. For example, they should frequently look around and note whether they see the same people nearby, because it could be those people are actually looking for victims.

Another precaution is not leaving a venue with cash. “If you win a lot of money, ask for a check instead of pocketing your cash or coin winnings,” said Messick.

Once people are in their vehicles and preparing to drive home, they need to again be especially mindful of their surroundings, he said.

If they think they are being followed, they should call 911, explain they are in possession of gambling winnings and believe they are being followed.

“Or,” said Messick, “they can drive to the nearest police barracks or station. People can also drive to a heavily populated area, call 911, lock their doors and wait for police.”

The women, 64 and 54, had visited Dover Downs Hotel & Casino March 2. About 7:30 p.m., as they returned to their Croydon Road home, they were approached by two black men who were wearing all-black clothing and black hoods. Police said the men grabbed both women and demanded money. They obtained an undisclosed sum of money and then fled the area on foot.

The assailants have been linked to another crime in Dover involving other victims who were also returning from a casino, said Cpl. Gary Fournier. Delaware State Police spokesman.

Police arrested James J. Durham, 25, of Dover, Tuesday, March 16.

He was charged with first-degree robbery, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, second-degree conspiracy and offensive touching. Police said Durham was one of two assailants. The other suspect remains at large.

“Durham was picked up by Dover PD and was linked to the crimes in Rehoboth. He was linked to a crime in Dover that had to do with the slots. The women were at Dover Downs earlier that evening,” said Fournier.

Attempts to reach responding Dover Police officer Lt. Tim Stump were not successful at press time; however, Lt. Rob Scott also confirmed the two crimes were linked.

Durham is being held at Delaware Correctional Center in Smyrna in default of $30,000 bail.

Police are asking anyone with information about this case to call Det. John Messick at 856-5850, Ext. 213, Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or leave a tip online at tipsubmit.com.
