Atlantic Jazz Yard brings
classic flavor to Rehoboth Beach
A visit to Atlantic Jazz Yard in Rehoboth Beach is like stepping into the past without leaving the laid-back atmosphere of the beach.

The bartenders wear ties, the jazz pumps in over the speakers and a baby grand piano sits in the corner.

While the aura of the place transports visitors to a 1920s club, the sunny weather outside quickly brings them back to the reality of the beach location.

Co-owner Matthew Scheller said the concept of Atlantic Jazz Yard, 37 Wilmington Ave., centers on its classy cocktails and eclectic dinner menu.

The cocktails pay homage to Prohibition-style drinks and are made using hand-chipped ice and fresh-squeezed juices. Among the choices is champagne cocktail, which features a sugar cube treated with aromatic bitters, topped with chilled champagne and a twist of lemon.

The Last Word, invented in the Prohibition era, consists of green Chartreuse, Bluecoat gin, maraschino liqueur and fresh lime juice. An even older drink is the Sazerac, which originated in New Orleans in the 1830s and consists of Sazerac rye whiskey, sugar and dashes of Peychaud’s bitters in a chilled glass rinsed with absinthe and garnished with a lemon twist.

“Our liquor menu is a bit more esoteric because a lot of the old cocktails required uncommon things you wouldn’t see,” Scheller said.

The bar also features a variety of crafted beers made everywhere from Belgium to Brooklyn.

The restaurant has 50 bottles available with six taps serving beers such as St. Peter’s English Ale, a traditional English-style ale, and Brooklyner Weisse, a German-style wheat beer made by Brooklyn Lager.

Atlantic Jazz Yard features 14 wines – seven whites and seven reds, Scheller said.

The food menu is heavy on seafood, all at modest price points.

Guests will find Kobe beef burgers, crab cakes, mussels, clams and steaks. Atlantic Jazz Yard also offers grilled flatbread pizzas topped off with a variety of unconventional toppings.

The outdoor courtyard has daily three-course dinners and a late-night dessert menu, which is available from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Scheller said another highlight is its early evening special, from 5 to 6 p.m., featuring half-off cocktails and draft beer, a $25 three-course meal and half off the bar menu.

“It’s a pretty killer deal,” Scheller said.

Of course, what would a place called Atlantic Jazz Yard be without live jazz every night from 8 to 11 p.m?

“Most of the jazz comes from Philadelphia, with some from New York,” Scheller said. “We’re doing a lot of traditional jazz. More like classic kind of stuff, not the rockier, blues kind of stuff.”

Scheller and co-owners Matt and Colleen Swartz also own two restaurants in Pennsylvania with classical themes: Tap and Table in Emmaus, near Allentown, which is focused primarily on its beer selection, and The Bookstore, a 1920s-style speakeasy in Bethlehem.

The ownership group opened Atlantic Jazz Yard in late May.

“It’s a really nice, calm atmosphere. It’s really a place to kind of get away from the hustle and bustle of the town. It’s very romantic – listen to some live jazz, have a nice cocktail and have some food,” Scheller said.

Atlantic Jazz Yard is open daily, 5 p.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 302-227-6869 or go to atlanticjazzyard.com
