“Sussex County Air Force” Presents Flyover Event This Saturday; Farmers Markets Opening Dates Announced
It’s Memorial Day Weekend at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, the traditional kickoff to the annual summer season. To say this will be a summer unlike any other, however, is a bit of an understatement.
But even with everything that’s currently going on in the United States and throughout the world, we’re still planning to have as much fun as possible over the new few months here in the coastal region.
Most of the area beaches already opened up last week, but Delaware Gov. John Carney has now given the go ahead from the state for them to officially open for the season.
Many of the area’s large festivals and gatherings will not be happening this year, however, as social distancing rules will still be in effect throughout the region. But the boardwalks are open, the beaches are open and things are beginning to pick up from Ocean City all the way north to Lewes and beyond.

With all that said, let’s take a look at some of our highlighted events and activities for the next few days in the coastal region:
Sussex Air Force Flyover (May 23). There’s another flyover event scheduled for this Saturday, May 23, but this one is a bit different from similar events that have been held in recent weeks.
This special flyover event, which is being organized by the Delaware Aviation Museum and several local businesses, is being promoted as the “Sussex County Air Force Salute” and will feature World War II era and other 20th century aircraft.
Participating in the flyover will be a P-51 Mustang, a B-25 Mitchell Bomber, a Tiger Moth and other planes, with routes encompassing not only the county’s three main health centers, but also Routes 1, 13 and 113.
The large planes taking part in the event will be leaving Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown at 11 a.m. on Saturday and will cover the entire route. Four smaller planes will leave immediately after and cover the western half of the country, before refueling and flying over the eastern half of Sussex County, beginning at around 1 p.m.

Highway One Companies Virtual 5k (May 25). Launching from “Anywhere USA,” as indicated on the race website, this virtual 5K is held in memory of Doug White and is a Ten Sisters of Dewey Beach Race Series event.
Scheduled for Monday, May 25, this 18th annual event raises money for several local charitable organizations, including the Sussex Consortium, the Tyanna Foundation, the Rotary Clubs of Area 41 and the DB Lifeguards.
The registration fee is $25, with tee shirts and medals mailed to participants the week after the race.

Farmers Market Openings (Various Dates). Now given the go ahead by Delaware Gov. John Carney, various farmers markets around Sussex County will be opening for the season in the next few days.

Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market – Tuesday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Grove Park
Historic Lewes Farmers Market – Saturday, May 30, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., at George H.P. Smith Park
Bethany Beach Famers Market – Sunday, June 7, from, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Garfield Parkway & Pennsylvania Avenue
Fenwick Island Famers Market – Friday, June 12, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Route 1 Bayside at Warren’s Station
Milton Farmers Market – Friday, May 22, from 3 to 6 p.m., at 6 Village Center Boulevard
Nassau Valley Farmers Market – Sunday, May 24, from 12 to 3 p.m., at Nassau Valley Vineyards
Riverwalk Farmers Market – Saturday, May 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Riverwalk Park in Milford
