9 Ways to Stay Busy During the Coronavirus Outbreak at the Delaware and Maryland Beaches

March 18, 2020

As I’m sure everyone is expecting by now, this is going to be a much different Weekender blog than you’ve become accustomed to over the last few years. It’s an unfortunate byproduct of the world we currently find ourselves living in.

Where we would normally be promoting fun, family friendly events being held throughout the beautiful coastal region, this week we’re going to be focusing on things you can do while staying away from crowds and large gatherings of people.

It’s a sobering thought really, this is all hitting us just as the Delaware and Maryland beaches were beginning to pick up in preparation of the upcoming Spring and Summer seasons. But it is what it is, and we all have to do our part to slow the spread of the pandemic that’s currently sweeping the nation and the world.

We also need to help each other! We’ll touch on it later in this blog entry, but the economic fallout from the current national climate could be felt for some time to come.

It’s important to support our local businesses as much as we can during this time. And there are ways we can safely do that, which we’ll be discussing below.

So keeping in mind that this is not going to be your normal Weekender blog (and probably won’t be for a couple of months), let’s get started by talking about a few things that you and your family can do here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches during this difficult and unprecedented time in America.

Take a Walk on the Beach/Boardwalk. There’s no way around it – our lives and routines are going to be interrupted during this time of national crisis. But this is geared toward reducing and even eliminating large groups of people from being in close proximity to one another.

But the beach and the boardwalk are still there, and what better to spend a little alone time than by also enjoying the serenity of a quiet beach or by taking a leisurely stroll along the Rehoboth, Bethany or even Ocean City boardwalks?

Don’t stop and subject yourself to any gatherings of people, mind you, but taking a walk at the beach should be safe enough. Just use necessary precautions and enjoy!

Visit the State Parks. As of this writing, Delaware’s state parks are not expected to close during the Coronavirus outbreak. In fact, officials are encouraging visitors by waiving entrance fees through the end of April.

Park offices and nature centers are closed during the outbreak and all programs and tours have been canceled, but the parks do remain open and can be used by the public.

State officials do urge, however, that all guests engage in responsible social distancing practices during this time.

Support Local Businesses. We know this is a tough one, and there’s only so much you can do. But there are a number of small and family owned businesses at the beaches that will be experiencing tough financial times in the days and weeks ahead.

If you’re able, order some takeout or delivery from local restaurants to help keep them stay afloat during this outbreak. We’re going to come out the other side eventually and we want all of our great local businesses to come out the other side with us.
