Bayhealth will be holding a LGBTQ Health Symposium on Monday, Nov. 5. The symposium will be held in Pavilion Rooms 1 and 2 at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, located at 640 S. State St. in Dover. It will also be video conferenced to Conference Rooms B & C at Bayhealth Milford Memorial. The symposium will begin at 8 a.m. with registration and continental breakfast, and the program will run from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The keynote speaker, Elsa T. Goldstein, MD, of Bayhealth Colon and Rectal Surgery, Milford, specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, management, and treatment of several conditions that affect the lower digestive tract. Her presentation titled, Anal cancer incidence is rising; Can we reverse this trend by screening? will address the etiology of anal cancer and the rationale for screening. Dr. Goldstein will also discuss treatment options and prevention strategies.
“The incidence of anal cancer is rising, and the highest risk group is HIV+ men who have sex with men,” said Dr. Goldstein. “Such individuals have an estimated 10 percent lifetime risk of developing anal cancer, which is higher than the risk of other cancers in the population for which we screen, i.e. prostate, breast and colon.” Anal cancer is caused by the HPV virus. Precancerous changes can be detected with screening, and if found, these abnormal cells can be destroyed.
Other presenters include John J. Fink, MD, of Bayhealth Primary Care, Smyrna, who will talk about HIV preventative PREP therapy. Drs. Goldstein and Fink will be joined by Denise Morris EdD, MSN, RN, to discuss the perceptions of transgender patients in healthcare. Transgender Advocate Deja Alverez, a system navigator for the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Health, will also present.
