Bayheath Foundation Spotlights Cardiac Surgery Program

August 17, 2018

The Bayhealth Foundation recently hosted area donors and a group of former cardiac care patients for a reception and cardiac surgery presentation at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino.

Bayhealth Foundation President Lindsay Rhodenbaugh kicked off the program, highlighting the excellent cardiac care close to home with his personal story of gratitude for the patient care he’s received at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus. He introduced hospital presenters, Director of Clinical Outcomes John D. Mannion, MD, and Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon Gary W. Szydlowski, MD.

Drs. Mannion and Szydlowksi shared the evolution of the hospital’s cardiac surgery program and the success that is positioning Bayhealth to be a regional leader for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). This minimally invasive procedure has been a game-changer in cardiac surgery nationally by effectively treating aortic stenosis in patients who are too high-risk for open-heart surgery. Bayhealth has now performed 50 TAVR procedures, propelling to new heights the top-notch cardiac care in our local community.

“We’ve successfully demonstrated that a small program with a dedicated medical team and administrative support can achieve superior results,” said Dr. Szydlowski.

During the Q&A portion, the physicians fielded questions from attendees, noting that extensive training combined with experience from major cardiac centers has enabled Bayhealth’s team to be on par with the best in the region. Dr. Szydlowski reminded attendees that if they find themselves experiencing symptoms they shouldn’t wait to take action, and should feel assured they’ll be in good hands with Bayhealth cardiac providers.
