Beaches in Lewes is bringing back simple with timeless recipes for dine-in or carryout
Beaches Seafood Market and Restaurant in Lewes is a lot more than just a carryout and market. Guests can relax in the dining room or enjoy the weather out on the deck – perhaps at a table piled high with fat, steaming crabs. Proprietors Don and Lori Allan are obsessive about how the crabs at Beaches are prepared: They’re made to order (so call ahead!), and they specialize in Maryland-style “wet seasoning” where the secret spice mix is included in the cooking process. The upshot? The large crabs at Beaches are only $60 a dozen. Compare that to other crab houses!
The menu tempts with all sorts of fresh seafood, including the legendary crab cakes, shrimp, littlenecks, oysters, snow crabs, scallops and mussels. Landlubbers will appreciate the selection of wings, potato skins, a foot-long hot dog, an overstuffed chicken sandwich and Don’s one-of-a-kind burger. Raw bar lovers will gobble up the market prices on clams and oysters. And don’t forget Don’s signature bacon-wrapped scallops and fried softshells - particularly wallet friendly at only $20 for two – AND two sides of your choice!
Fresh fish to take home is stocked daily, and the large crabs are shipped in from Maryland. Entrees for dine-in or carryout include those crab cakes, fried flounder, scallops and the new grilled salmon with wasabi sauce. And most any dish can be broiled to order. The popular sides include potato salad, macaroni salad, slaw, mac ‘n’ cheese, baked potatoes and steamed-to-order broccoli.
Crab soup is a longtime favorite at Beaches, but Don also weighs in with his chili. Beware! It has a spicy personality! And don’t miss the stuffed nachos – sort of a nacho empanada, if you will. Don loves his wings crispy, so he serves them surrounded by buffalo sauce so they stay crispy down to the last bite. The fried oyster sandwich is also a pick hit – Don and his crew shuck ’em and bread ’em right there.
