January 22, 2020

Things are heating up this week, and then cooling down, as Bethany Beach prepares for the 2020 version of its popular Fire & Ice Festival. This highlight of the winter season is being held over three days in the south coastal region and is the main event on this weekend’s events calendar.

It’s still January in the coastal region, with several weeks left before the return of the warm weather. But don’t let Old Man Winter get you down – head outside and enjoy some great events while waiting for the arrival of spring.

Fire & Ice Festival (January 24-26).  This third annual event is again expected to draw good-sized crowds during it’s three days, with the weekend providing great opportunities for enjoying the resort during a less crowded time of the year.

There’s definitely a lot going on during this now annual festival, which is scheduled for Friday, January 24 through Sunday, January 26 in the resort.

The weekend’s events will benefit local non-profits and organizations, with the festival’s main beneficiary being Nemours duPont Pediatrics and SeniorCare, Sussex Campus.

The 2020 festival is also expanded to include locations in both Millville and Ocean View, with large interactive sculptures in each town.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Beach Bonfires. Happening both Friday and Saturday nights, on the beach near the Hollywood Street entrance.
  • Sculpture Demonstrations. Scheduled for Saturday from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m., you can watch 3,000 pound blocks of ice transformed into detailed sculptures. The theme for this year’s ice sculptures is “Out of this World.”
  • Ceremonial Smash Party. This concludes the event on Sunday night, as sculptors smash their icy creations to smithereens.
  • Block Party. This is scheduled for Lord’s Landscaping in Millville, on Saturday, January 25, from 12 to 8 p.m.
  • Alpha Alpha Party. Scheduled for Mango’s in downtown Bethany Beach, on Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are required for this event.
  • Movie Showings. “Space Buddies” (4:30 p.m.) and “Space Jam” (6:30 p.m.) will be shown at the Millville Boardwalk on Saturday, January 25. Tickets are $5 and come with a $1 off coupon for ice cream.

Winter Delmarva Birding Weekend (January 24-26).  Birding enthusiasts from throughout the mid-Atlantic will be descending on Delmarva over the next few days for this annual wintertime event, one of two held during the course of the year.

Now in its fifth year, the winter event is not as widely attended as the popular spring event in April, but that’s not to say there won’t be scores of bird lovers in the area this weekend.

Species that are highlighted during the winter include waterfowl, seabirds, shorebirds, snowy owls and many more.
