Cape Henlopen High School Baseball Preview

January 28, 2020

Pitchers and catchers will be reporting to their Major League Baseball teams in a few weeks, local Little League registration is taking place now, and the Houston Astros have removed all trash cans from the dugout. Baseball must be around the corner. I am excited to for our season to start.

Last year, the Cape Henlopen High School Baseball team finished the season with a record of 16-6 and another state playoff appearance. The Vikings surprising post season run saw us defeat Caesar Rodney, Milford and Dover High School. We eventually reached the state semi-final game where we played Appoquinimink High School and lost a 4-3 nail biter to the eventual state champions. Many of you may remember the close call that took place in this exciting game.

This season, Cape Baseball has once again set high expectations. After speaking with some of my teammates, it is safe to say that we are all ambitious for the 2020 season. The team saw eight seniors graduate at the end of the 2019 season. However, we have nine returning players from the previous team, with six of them being seniors. Our senior returners include; myself, Levi Clifton, Lucas Johnson, Robert Baxley, Edward Joyce, Sean Clendaniel, and Mason Carrow. I was able to ask about Lucas Johnson his thoughts regarding our team this year, to which he replied; “I am expecting a younger team with a lot of talent, spread out talent. We will have an all-around skilled lineup from the top to the bottom.” Robert Baxley, another returner, added his expectations; “We come together as one and do what we can to improve each day.”

The Cape Baseball team kicks their 2020 season off with an away game at Milford High School on March 24. The home opened is March 26 versus Caesar Rodney. Until then, we will be mentally and physically preparing in order to come back and make a statement this season.
