Close Out The Summer of 2019 in Style With These Family Friendly Holiday Weekend Events in the Coastal Region

August 28, 2019

If you’re like us here at the Oldfather Group, you’re probably wondering how the Summer of 2019 came and went so quickly. It seems to happen every year – you blink and suddenly it’s fall and we’re all left with great memories of another summer season at the Delaware and Maryland beaches as we begin transitioning to the fall festival season and the pending holidays.

But before we officially lay this summer to rest on Monday afternoon at the 2019 Bethany Beach Jazz funeral (read more about this unique annual event below), there’s plenty to do over the three-day holiday weekend.

So head on out for one more big summertime weekend at the beach before settling into the post-season schedule that’s likely filled with school days, work routines and pre-holiday activities.

Okay, on to the five pack of great local events we’re featuring for this year’s Labor Day Weekend. We begin with the event that will officially close the weekend on Monday afternoon; it’s one you don’t want to miss!

Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral (September 2). It’s that time of year again when we say goodbye to the Summer of 2019 and begin looking forward to the Summer of 2020, and the next traditional summer season in the coastal region.

This year marks the 34th time that this family-friendly satirical event has taken place in Bethany Beach. It’s celebrated each Labor Day Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the north end of the Bethany Beach Boardwalk.

This quirky jazz funeral tradition is family-friendly, free to the public and you can even get into the spirit by wearing black and preparing to say your own personal goodbye to the Summer of 2019.

The Dixie Cats, the Downtown Dixieland Band and the Jazz Funeral Irregulars will be providing the musical entertainment for this year’s event.

Broadkill Music Festival (August 31). Visit Milton Memorial Park this Saturday from 11 a.m. to  7:30 p.m., as the final weekend of summer is celebrated with a day-long music festival.

Several local favorites will be performing during the course of the day, including the always entertaining Cathy Gorman, Dave Herscher, No Spare Time, the Timmons Family, LSD Band and Tydewater.

Food will also be available, as well as plenty of great fun and fellowship along the shores of the Broadkill River.

Sundance 2019 (August 31-September 1). As always, this promises to again be one of the hottest parties of the season and is scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.

A major fundraiser for the gay and lesbian community center, this fun-filled event attracts nearly 1,000 participants each year to the “Nation’s Summer Capital.”

The theme for 2019 is “Rainbow XXXII: Ultraviolet Disco Day-Glo Sunrise,” with activities including both live and silent auctions, an open bar, music by Stephen Strasser, a “tea dance,” special guests and much more.

As always, all proceeds benefit the activities and programs of CAMP Rehoboth.
