Delaware State Park Programs Provide Fun And Entertaining Options During The Offseason

January 2, 2020

Happy New Year everyone!

We hope everyone is off on the right foot in 2020, while wrapping up another great holiday season here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

Regular readers of our “Weekender Blog” know that we feature many of the area’s great events and happenings here on a weekly basis, something we enjoy doing regardless of the time of year.

But while Delaware and Maryland’s coastal region is well known for big events and fun local gatherings, we can’t say there are many of those types of things to feature during the first week of January.

We do have some big events coming up soon, like the 2020 Polar Bear Plunge, the Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival, Bethany Beach’s Fire & Ice Festival and several others.

But for this week, there’s just not a whole lot on the events calendar. So what we’re going to do instead is feature some of our great state parks, particularly programs and events that are coming up for the rest of January.

We’re blessed to have some great state parks in the area, so keep reading below for all that’s happening this month. And get out there and have some fun!

Cape Henlopen State Park

Let’s kick things off with one of the jewels of Delaware’s state park system, and that is the fabulous Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes.

Featuring shoreline on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay, Cape Henlopen usually ranks as the most popular state park in Delaware and always features a number of great programs and activities.

It’s also home to historic Fort Miles, which provides an incredible way to spend the day. And if you have a chance to tour the refurbished bunker and/or the gun park, don’t miss out!

Programs at Cape Henlopen State Park between now and the end of January include:

Quadrantids Meteor Shower (January 3). Available at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 3 for just $2 a person, this program is a great chance for watching the meteor shower and other wonders of winter in the night sky. It’s available for those 7 years old and up, with pre-registration required by calling 302-645-6852.

Feeding Frenzy (January 4, 11, 18 and 25). Beginning at 1 p.m. each Saturday in January, this free program teaches participants the different ways fish in the local area eat, while also providing opportunities for feeding both the stingrays and other fish in the nature center aquariums.

Winter Bird Walk (January 14). Held once a month during the winter months, this program is available to anyone ages 10 and up who enjoys bird watching in the local area. This is a free program, but pre-registration is recommended by calling 302-645-6852.

Chillin’ With Reptiles (January 18). Limited to 40 participants, this program costs $3 per person and will answer questions like where reptiles go to survive the cold weather and what special methods they use to make it through the winter unharmed. You can even see and touch a few snakes and turtles, if so inclined. Pre-registration is required by calling 302-645-6852 and the start time is 11 a.m.

Seals at the Beach (January 25). Beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, this program discusses which species of seals you’ll find in Delaware and what they’re doing here during the winter months. Available for anyone 7 years of age or older, pre-registration is required by calling 302-645-6852.
