Fall Festival Season Kicks Off This Weekend With Four Big Annual Events
Southern Delaware's much anticipated Fall Festival Season kicks off in earnest this weekend with four huge annual events dominating the calendar.
And this is just the beginning of several weeks ahead that will be filled with fun and exciting happenings all throughout the region.
Kicking things off this weekend is a quartet of the region's most anticipated annual events. From Rehoboth Beach to Oak Orchard, Milford and others, there's certainly something for everyone over the next few days in southern Delaware.
It's probably impossible to get to all of the events we've featured below, but two or three is definitely doable. And you're sure to have a great time, no matter which event or events you decide to visit and enjoy this weekend.
These early September festivals are spread throughout the county. So no matter where you're located in the region, there should be a great event just a short drive from your front door.
And this is just the beginning. From now through mid-November, there will be fantastic local festivals and events on the calendar each and every weekend.
So mark your calendars and plan accordingly.
Now, here are our choices for fun things to do in southern Delaware for the weekend of September 7-9:
Nanticoke Indian Powwow (September 8-9). Organized by the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, this major fundraiser is a cultural event that features lots of singing and dancing. It’s also a learning experience, allowing the general public a chance to witness the customs and traditions of Delmarva’s native inhabitants.
Native Americans come from all around the country to participate in this annual event, including artisans who display and sell their handmade goods. Items for sale include jewelry, pottery, moccasins, dream catchers and more.
The Nanticoke tribe invites everyone to join them for their annual powwow, but they do ask that outsiders be respectful of their customs and traditions. To learn more about the 2018 Nanticoke Indian Powwow, visit www.nanticokeindians.org.
Rehoboth Beach Sandcastle Contest (September 7-8). Take the kids to the beach this weekend for the annual Rehoboth Beach Sandcastle Contest, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This is the 40th year for this popular local tradition, held on the beach in front of Funland at Delaware Avenue. The contest is open to both adults and children and sculptures may be started anytime on Saturday, with judging scheduled for 3 p.m.
Members of the public are also invited to take sandcastle building lessons on Friday between 5 and 7 p.m., at Rehoboth Avenue and the Boardwalk.

Bethany Boardwalk Arts Festival (September 8). The annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival is scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the Boardwalk. More than 100 artists will be on hand this year, from locations all around the United States.
Jewelry, glass, pottery, watercolor paintings, oil paintings, photography, woodworking and more will be on display, with the surf of the Atlantic Ocean providing a scenic backdrop.
