First Weekend of March Brings Annual Events in Milton, Lewes and Ocean City

March 4, 2020

With March now upon us, things are really beginning to pick up here in the coastal region, including this week when St. Patrick’s Day festivities take center stage in Milton.

So don your green apparel and head to downtown Milton for coastal Delaware’s premier St. Patrick’s Day Parade (stay tuned for Ocean City’s on March 14), as well as a host of festivities near the banks of the Broadkill River.

March traditionally serves as a sort of transition between the sleepy winter months of January and February and the busy warm weather season that kicks off in earnest in April and May. And with St. Patrick’s Day, the upcoming Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival and much more, 2020 certainly seems to be continuing that recent trend.

Spring is certainly in the air, and this first full weekend of March is a great time to get out and about and enjoy all that’s happening at the fabulous Delaware and Maryland beaches.

Here are our top choices for you to do just that:

St. Patrick’s Day Parade and 5K (March 8). This popular annual event takes place in the downtown historic district of Milton and not only includes the parade, for which the gathering is most well known, but also drink and food specials and a “Lucky Leprechaun 5K.”

The event was conceived and is still organized by Irish Eyes Restaurant and all proceeds this year will again go to supporting the Milton Fire Department, the Milton Chamber of Commerce and the Gladys Wilkins “Seeding the Future” Scholarship Fund.

Previous parades have boasted several dozen entries and organizers are expecting a big turnout again this year, so be sure to arrive in Milton early and secure the best possible vantage point from which to watch all of the festivities.

The 5K is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with the parade following at 2 p.m.

St. Patrick’s Day Quayside Festivities (March 8). Downtown Milton is party central on Saturday, March 8, as the 2020 St. Patrick’s Day festivities dominate this coastal Delaware community.

Hosted by the historic Milton Theatre, this local event is centered on the quayside area near the Broadkill River and features a beer garden, live music, a prime vantage point for watching the parade (see above) and much more.

The event kicks off at noon, with children’s activities that include face painting and a bouncy house, the previously mentioned beer garden, plenty of food options and entertainment that includes Hot Sauce Band, Lower Case Blues, Janglebachs and more.

Organizers request attendees to bring their own chairs for a full day of fun in downtown Milton.

Delaware Resorts Health, Fitness & Leisure Expo (March 7-8). This second annual event is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Sunday.

More than 70 of the region’s top health and fitness companies will be on hand both days, with health screenings provided by Beebe Healthcare.

Admission is free, with gifts and prizes handed out during the course of the event. Healthy food options are provided by Bountiful Foods, with a portion of proceeds going to local charities.
