Funland Opens For Its 57th Season In Rehoboth Beach This Saturday, May 11, at 1 P.M.

May 8, 2019

It’s Mother’s Day Weekend in America, which means it’s time to show those special ladies in your life how much they mean to you. But in Coastal Delaware, this special time of year also means enjoying and celebrating a local tradition that’s now nearly six decades long.

Yes, it’s the 2019 opening of the one and only Funland on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. Still family owned after 57 years, this local treasure provides a full season of low-cost fun for the entire family. It has for decades and will likely continue to do so for many more decades to come.

While we’ll be giving you a preview of the opening weekend here in our weekly events blog, also visit us online on Thursday, May 9, when we’ll be featuring a look back at this wonderful coastal Delaware tradition through the years.

Okay, let’s get right to it. Here are the Oldfather Group’s top choices for fun and family friendly events during the weekend of May 10-12 in the coastal region.

We begin in the “Nation’s Summer Capital” of Rehoboth Beach…

Funland Opening Weekend (May 11-12). In what has become a highly anticipated Mother’s Day Weekend tradition in Rehoboth Beach, the fabulous Funland amusement park officially opens it’s doors for the 2019 season this Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m.

All games and rides will be open this weekend, beginning at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and will be open Fridays, Saturday and Sundays for the rest of the month of May, in addition to Memorial Day. The popular Haunted Mansion officially opens for the season on Saturday, May 18, at 6 p.m.

Funland will be open seven days a week beginning on Monday, June 3, continuing through Labor Day Weekend in September.

Dewey Golden Jubilee (May 10-12). Approximately 200 Golden Retrievers and their owners are expected this weekend for the first of two annual “Golden” weekends in Dewey Beach.

Frequently cited as one of the most dog-friendly beaches in America, Dewey Beach will again be party central this weekend, with dozens of golden haired canines chasing tennis balls on the beach and frolicking in the still chilly waters of the Atlantic.

If you’d like to support the Dewey Golden Jubilee financially, or contribute to the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study (GRLS), you can do so through the organization’s Go Fund Me account here.

Nanticoke Indian Heritage Day (May 11). The Nanticoke Indian Tribe invites everyone to its 2019 Heritage Day this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission to the Tribe’s museum in Oak Orchard will be free during the event, which is billed as a celebration of the Nanticoke’s heritage and culture.

Activities for the day include Native American storytelling, tribal dancing and music, vendors and more. For more information, on this year’s Heritage Day festivities, call 945-7022 or email info@nanticokeindians.org.
