Great Delaware Kite Festival Kicks Off Easter Weekend Events in the Coastal Region

April 17, 2019

Heading into Easter Weekend, there are some great events coming up in communities all throughout coastal Delaware and Maryland. And we’re here to tell you all about them in the latest installment of our “Weekender Blog,” brought to you every week by the real estate professionals at the Oldfather Group of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty.

Our featured event this holiday weekend is the annual Great Delaware Kite Festival at Cape Henlopen State Park., which has been held at the Delaware beaches for more than a half century.

Held on Good Friday every year, it’s a fantastic family-friendly event right here in our own backyard, and we encourage everyone to head out to the park this weekend and enjoy the festivities.

Other events over the next few days are in several coastal towns, so keep reading below for much more on everything that’s happening this weekend at the beaches.

The Great Delaware Kite Festival (April 19). Held at Cape Henlopen State Park and co-sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation, this is the 51st year for this popular early season event in coastal Delaware.

Festivities will again kick off with an Easter Egg Hunt at 11 a.m., with 5,000 eggs spread throughout the course, followed by kite competitions for children and teenagers. There are also several other events planned, including the “highest kite” contest and an egg toss competition. Age categories for the kite competitions are up to age 12, ages 13 to 17 and also 18 and above.

There’s no cost to attend the festival, but entrance fees to the state park do apply. These are $5 for those with Delaware license plates and $10 for cars with out of state license plates. Transportation via the Jolly Trolley will also be available from the park’s beach parking lot.
