Here’s 5 More Ways to Stay Busy, While Stuck at Home During the Pandemic

March 25, 2020

It’s the time of the year when excitement is supposed to be building with each passing day, the busy spring and summer seasons at the Delaware and Maryland beaches drawing ever so closer. Sadly, that’s obviously not happening in 2020.

Believe us when we say we’d much rather be telling you about the great weekend events that would normally be taking place this final weekend of March. We just can’t do that this year, for obvious reasons.

But it is what it is and there’s nothing we can do but wait this thing out. Eventually, it’ll once again be safe to go outside and enjoy all that Delaware and Maryland’s coastal region has to offer.

For now, the best we can do is offer you a few more ideas on how to make the most of this downtime at home. While practicing social distancing is no fun, it is incredibly important for the next few weeks so we can come out the other side and begin slowly getting back to normal.

One note before we delve more into this week’s “Coronavirus Edition” of our Weekender Blog. We were notified earlier this week than the 2020 Firefly Music Festival, scheduled for June 18-21 at Dover Downs, has been canceled. So if you had already purchased tickets for this popular Delaware event, check their website in the next few days for news on getting your refund.

Also, don’t forget to support our great local restaurants if you can via takeout and delivery service. Some of our media friends compiled a fantastic list of southern Delaware restaurants that are offering these options, as well as a few that also offer curbside service.

Okay, on to this week’s blog, which could easily be subtitled “Making the Best of a Bad Situation.”

Let’s get started…

Good Ole’ Fashioned Board Games. This quarantine is a great opportunity to introduce the younger members of the family to some of the classic board games of days gone by.

Who among the Generation X crowd, all the way to the Baby Boomers, doesn’t remember a fun-filled night playing Monopoly or Life? What about Sorry or Clue or even the classic fun-filled romp Mouse Trap?

Pull out your favorite and enjoy! And when that’s done, grab a deck of cards and play a spirited game of Gin Rummy or Hearts; maybe even throw in a little Old Maid from time to time.

We know this is a difficult time, with schools closed and everyone stuck at home. But that’s no reason why you can’t enjoy some good old family fun, doing things you might otherwise not give a second thought to.

Binge Watching Your Favorite Show. There’s a reason why Netflix is one of the few stocks these days that’s actually increasing in price. When people are at home, they watch a lot more television than usual.

So if there’s a show you’ve been wanting to watch but never got around to it, what better time than the present to do a little binge watching with the family.

There are thousands of shows to choose from. So pick your favorite comedy, drama or cop show and settle in for a fun night in from of the television.

Just don’t forget the popcorn!

Start a Backyard Project. If you’re fortunate enough to have a backyard and want a good family project you can do at home, this is a great time to do just that.

There are tons of fun ideas to choose from. Start a vegetable garden, build a tree house, create your own backyard miniature golf course, do a little landscaping or pick another project altogether and get to work.

Not only is this a great way to pass the time while quarantined, but it will also keep you outside and active and, most importantly, away from the refrigerator. Because let’s face it, it sure is easy to put on a few pounds when you’re stuck at home 24 hours a day.

Staying busy, and disciplined, can certainly help.
