NANTICOKE NAMED ONE OF NATION'S 100 TOP HOSPITALS BY IBM WATSON HEALTH

March 18, 2019

Nanticoke Memorial Hospital has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by IBM Watson Health™. Using clinical, operational and patient satisfaction data, this list recognizes the top-performing hospitals in the United States.

“Nanticoke holds several very special awards and recognitions for the quality of care we provide. However, this award is extraordinary. To be included on this list, hospitals must be high performers across 10 clinical and operational areas – not just in one or two areas,” said Steve Rose, RN, MN, President/CEO of Nanticoke Health Services. “We have known for quite some time that our team does an outstanding job. But to be selected from among nearly 900 other similar hospitals as a ‘Top Hospital’, is amazing and demonstrates the terrific care given here.”

Since 1993, the Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® study has been a much sought-after recognition by hospitals nationally. Acknowledged to be the ‘gold-standard’ for hospital performance, Watson Health—formerly, Truven Health—uses independent and objective research to analyze hospital and health system performance in 10 clinical and operational areas. The areas include important indicators such as mortality, complications, infection, readmission, finances, and patient satisfaction. Overall, Nanticoke was ranked in the 98.6th percentile among other hospitals. Nanticoke’s overall performance placed it as one of only 20 hospitals with less than 100 beds included on this year’s list.

“We have worked hard at Nanticoke to provide the level of care that each one of us would want for our family members,” observed Penny Short, BSN, RN, COO. “I am so proud of the staff – this recognition belongs to them and the hard work that they do every day and the fact that they want to do better the next day. Our focus on quality and service, and the awards we have received, would not be possible otherwise.”

Based on the results of this year’s study, Watson Health extrapolates that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities:

  • More than 103,000 additional lives could be saved;
  • More than 38,000 additional patients could be complication-free;
  • More than $8.2 billion in inpatient costs could be saved; and
  • Approximately 155,000 fewer discharged patients would be readmitted within 30 days.

“At a time when research shows that the U.S. spends nearly twice as much on healthcare as other high-income countries, yet still has poorer population health outcomes , the 100 Top Hospitals are bucking the trend by delivering consistently better care at a lower cost,” said Ekta Punwani, 100 Top Hospitals® program leader at IBM Watson Health. “The hospitals on this list represent the current vanguard in value-based care and we applaud their commitment to quality.”

“This is an amazing honor,” adds Steve Rose, “and we want all of our community to know of the great work that is happening here at Nanticoke and will continue to happen.”
