The Official Summer Season is Upon Us! Memorial Day Weekend Events Abound in the Coastal Region.
Memorial Day Weekend 2019 is finally upon us, marking the beginning of this year’s traditional summer season at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.
If you don’t live in or visit the coastal region on a regular basis, trying to accurately describe this first weekend of the summer can be a bit tough to do. But Oldfather Group Chief Buyer Consultant Adam Linder described it perfectly to a new client just last week, stating:
“It’s like it’s your first trip to a department store ever, and you’re walking in on Black Friday!”
If you’ve ever frequented the Delaware and/or Maryland beaches on Memorial Day Weekend, you probably just had a good chuckle. And it’s funny because it’s true, right?
But as it is Memorial Day Weekend, a few reminders if you’re going to be out and about over the next few days:
- Remember that parking meters in all coastal locations are now active. This means it’s going to cost you a few bucks to park your car close to the beaches. Keep this in mind and plan accordingly.
- Remember to practice patience on the roads. This is always one of the busiest weekends of the year at the beaches, and there is going to be a lot of increased traffic on the major roadways. Just take a deep breath and leave a little extra time to get where you need to be.
- Remember the reason for the holiday. Even if you’re not planning on attending one of the Memorial Day ceremonies that we’ll be mentioning below, take a moment to honor those who paid the ultimate price so that we can enjoy a holiday weekend like this at the beach.
Without further ado, here are the Oldfather Group’s featured events and festivals for the weekend of May 24-26 at and near Delaware and Maryland’s coastal regions:
Bethany Beach Poseidon Festival (May 24-27). This multi-day festival in Bethany Beach is designed as a way for community members to “celebrate the sea,” while learning about ways to prepare for coastal emergencies.
The Bethany Beach Bandstand will serve as home base for the four days of the festival, which will include a series of family friendly events over Memorial Day Weekend 2019.
Scheduled events and activities include a tribute to Jimmy Buffett by tribute band Parrotbeach, live sand sculpting by local artist George Zaiser, mermaid activities and encounters, pirate shows, a costume contest in search of Mr. and/or Ms. Poseidon, the 2nd annual Bethany Beach Hermit Crab Derby, a scavenger hunt on the beach, a luau party and much more.
There will also be plenty of live music throughout the long weekend. Scheduled performers include Sons of Pirates, the Chris Sacks Band, the U.S. Navy Band Country Current and the aforementioned Parrotbeach.

Horseshoe Crab and Shorebird Festival (May 25). This annual festival is scheduled for Milton Memorial Park and Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge and celebrates horseshoe crabs and migrating shorebirds, two mainstays of coastal Delaware’s animal world.
Activities at this fun yearly festival, scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include boat rides down the Broadkill River, canoe trips on Prime Hook Creek, music, food, exhibits, games for the kids and trail walks at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.
There will also be a shuttle bus running between downtown Milton and Prime Hook.

Artisans Fair in Ocean View (May 25). This 12th annual event will be held at Lord Baltimore Elementary School in Ocean View on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and features a wide variety of unique, handcrafted art objects.
An outside farmer’s market is scheduled as part of the event, running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Exhibitors will be displaying their crafts throughout the day and will include areas such as textiles, metalwork, fine art, glass, jewelry, pottery, photography, woodworking and sculpture.
