“One Day at a Time” reminds us that we do not have to face the anxiety of staying clean or sober forever; we only have to make it through today.

This slogan comes straight from the written instructions of our Creator, who found it important enough to teach throughout Scripture, across 44 books and roughly 6,000 years of recorded history.

In the Exodus account, God gave the Israelites manna in the wilderness:

“And in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground.”
— Exodus 16:13–14

And He told them it was to be consumed one day at a time:

“The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day.”
— Exodus 16:4

They were to gather what they needed only for that day; yet some tried to hold onto it for more than a day, but it rotted, stank, and grew worms.

There were two important exceptions:

  • Before the Sabbath, God told them to gather a double portion. That manna lasted two days without spoiling.
  • A portion of manna was placed in the Ark of the Covenant, where it was preserved for generations.

God was teaching His people how to live: to trust Him for what is needed today, and not be concerned for tomorrow.

In Exodus, He gave us these instructions. Then, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches us how to live them “one day at a time.”

He taught us to pray:

“Give us this day our daily bread.”
— Matthew 6:11

And He taught us how to face anxiety with faith:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
— Matthew 6:34

The message is clear: God does not ask us to carry the weight of tomorrow—only to trust Him, make the right choice, and take the next step today.
