Several Options to Have a Great Fourth of July Weekend at the Delaware and Maryland Beaches

Happy 4th of July Weekend everyone!

We hope everyone enjoys their holiday weekend here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, even as we continue with these challenging times in the United States and throughout the world.

While we do have some events and activities to tell you about today, we are having to do a last minute rewrite on this week’s blog after the surprise announcement that Dewey Beach has cancelled it’s fireworks show for Saturday evening.

This was just announced on Tuesday, so if you were planning on going to Dewey for the show, please be advised that it won’t be happening this year.

It’s rather sad as it was the last such show planned for the coastal region, so there are now no Independence Day fireworks planned this year for either the Delaware beaches or for Ocean City.

We get it, however, as caution is certainly warranted in the current times. But if you still want to get your 4th of July fireworks fix, we do have some virtual options for you below.

They may not be in our own backyard and the environment in 2020 will certainly be different, but you can still crack open a cold one and enjoy the fireworks with your family – it will just have to be on the big screen this year.

Okay, let’s get things started this week with the aforementioned virtual fireworks displays….

Virtual Fireworks Displays (July 4). We realize these may not be the 4th of July fireworks displays you had hoped for, but there are some good options virtually if you want to keep any traditions alive this Independence Day.

• A Capitol Fourth. PBS will be broadcasting a 40th anniversary presentation of this Washington, D.C. based fireworks display, hosted by John Stamos and Vanessa Williams. This show usually takes place in front of the U.S. Capitol, but this year is pre-recorded from several different locations. The show begins on Saturday, July 4, at 8 p.m.
• Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks. This will be broadcast on NBC on Saturday, July 4, from 8 to 10 p.m., and will feature performances from the Black Eyes Peas, Tim McGraw and John Legend. This year’s show is comprised of several fireworks displays around New York that were filmed in the week leading up to the holiday.
• Boston Pops Fireworks. This year’s traditional Boston Pops live concert has been cancelled, but there will still be a special broadcast airing on Bloomberg Television on Saturday, July 4, from 8 to 11 p.m. This year’s show pays tribute to essential workers, as well as those who have died due to the coronavirus. Virtual performances are expected from artists that include Renese King, Keith Lockart and John Williams, as well as the Boston Pops.

Produced by the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, these events are planned through mid August.

Selections for the coming week are “Ralph Breaks the Internet” on Monday, July 6, and then the bonfire on the beach on Wednesday, July 8.

Bring your own chair on movie nights, which begin at 8:30 p.m., on the beach at Dagsworthy Avenue. Then bring a chair and some marshmallows for the bonfire and roast your own yummy treats.

Both of these events are free to attend, but donations are appreciated. And please practice all health related mandates in regards to social distancing.

Funland Boardwalk Games Now Open (Ongoing). All of the rides and most of the inside games are yet to open for the summer, still awaiting guidance from the governor’s office, but Funland on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk is now able to offer at least a few entertainment options for summer visitors.

Five outdoor Boardwalk games are now open, the first step toward what Funland hopes will be a full reopening sometime during the Summer of 2020.

For now, stop by and enjoy the games that are being offered. I mean, no coastal Delaware summer is complete without a plush toy from Funland, right?
