Support the Homeless through “Night Without a Bed”

September 21, 2021

Southern Delaware’s emerging non-profit Family Promise Affiliate is hosting a sleep-out event at the Overfalls Lightship on October 8, 2021. Night Without a Bed is a national grass roots event which raises awareness and funds for families experiencing homelessness.

In Sussex County chaperones and teenage participants aged 12 – 16 from local youth and church groups will sleep outside in tents near the Overfalls Lightship in Lewes in order to simulate the experience of being homeless. In the run-up to the event, participants will challenge friends, neighbors, and family members to contribute financially to Family Promise of Southern Delaware at our NWAB Fundraising page

Every year in America, over 3 million children experience homelessness. Families experiencing homelessness account for 40% of all homeless in Delaware. Each day, in Delaware 18 kids become homeless. Nationally these children are 8-9 times more likely to repeat a grade, 3 times more likely to be placed in special education programs, and 7 times more likely to attempt suicide. 42% will drop out of school at some point and 47% suffer from anxiety, depression, or withdrawal. Family homelessness was a national crisis long before the pandemic, but the health and economic challenges of the past year have put many more children at risk of experiencing homelessness.
