The 2018-2019 season saw the Sussex Academy girls’ volleyball team finish with a 6-9 record. The young Seahawks graduated seven seniors from the previous year, a season that saw them notch a 10-5 record. Head Coach Hailee Gooch challenged her under-classmen going into this summer. She had already seen them gain valuable playing experience on the court, however, Coach Gooch wanted them to improve their ability to physically perform during games. As a result, the team has begun to train with Factory Sports in Lewes, DE.

Under the watchful eye of Factory Sports Strength and Fitness Coach, Deb Bottiglieri, the girls recently began a six-week program designed to increase their speed, agility, strength, and overall fitness levels. The timing of the program will take the team right up to the start of their volleyball sessions and season. Coach Deb has designed a program that the girls not only love, but one that is also highly effective. “Factory Sports is known for training individual athletes but collaborating with teams is an advantage”, states Coach Deb. She sees the girls push each other and compete in each and every exercise. “If one girl jumps a certain height, the next one wants to jump higher. It is fun to watch”, continued Bottiglieri.

The benefits of training as a team are endless; “teammates push each other to be better each time through as they want to do better than their friend” said Coach Deb. This leads us to the next advantage of team training, friendship. The girls on the team are building new friendships and strengthening existing ones. Sussex Academy setter, Emily Hudson, says; “there is always a good vibe and constant smiles on everyone’s face.” Emily goes on to say; “the biggest effect on our team is how it has brought us together.” The ability to push your teammates, who are also your friends, leads to something that is invaluable – team chemistry.
