A Wide Selection of Annual Events Spread Throughout the Coastal Region This First Weekend of August

July 31, 2019

It’s going to be another fantastic summertime weekend here in the coastal region, and we’ve got seven events to tell you about in our latest Oldfather Group“Weekender Blog.” In short, there’s plenty of fun things to see and do over the next few days at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, so keep reading for much more on what’s coming up.

The annual White Marlin Open in Ocean City is the biggest event on the schedule and you can learn more about this unique summertime fishing tournament by reading our preview below. But for more insight on “The Open,” check back on thecoastalcompass.com later in the week for a full feature on this yearly event in coastal Maryland.

But in addition to the main event in Ocean City, we also have a number of great things to tell you about in America’s First State. There are many family friendly events scheduled over the next few days in several coastal Delaware communities.

So without further delay, here are our choices for top events and happenings during the first weekend of August in Delaware and Maryland’s coastal regions.

We begin, as you can probably guess, in Ocean City…

White Marlin Open (August 5-9). This five-day event is the world’s largest billfish tournament and is being held for the 46th year in Ocean City. Hundreds of teams are expected to compete in 2019 for prize money that will total more than $5 million.

Last year’s tournament drew 3,000 contestants in categories that included white marlin, blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin and shark.

All fish will again we weighed on the official scale at Harbour Island, located at 14th Street and the Bay. Weigh-ins will occur each day between 4 and 9:15 p.m. and are free and open for the public to view and enjoy.

Ocean City has been known as the “White Marlin Capital of the World” since given that moniker by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939. And judging by the size and popularity of this yearly fishing tournament, that nickname will probably be around for some time to come.
