Wings & Wheels, Coast Day Headline Another Full Slate of Fall Festivals During the First Weekend of October
The busy 2019 fall festival season continues this week with many more annual happenings taking place in locations throughout the coastal region.
But with the exception of a couple of big events in Georgetown and Ocean City, this first weekend in October is really all about Lewes. You’ll definitely notice the “First Town in the First State” popping up a lot in this week’s blog entry, with events all centered around the 2019 Boast the Coast and Coast Day festivities.
So if you plan on getting out and about this weekend and enjoying the milder fall temperatures, Lewes is a great place to start.
As always, it’s going to be a great few days here in coastal Delaware!
Okay, now on to the six great autumn events we’re going to tell you about for this first weekend of October. We begin in Georgetown and one of the gems of every fall festival season…
Wings and Wheels (October 4-5). Tuskegee Airman Brigadier General Charles McGee headlines the 2019 edition of the popular Wings & Wheels Festival, again held at the Delaware Coastal Airport near Georgetown.
Beginning on Friday evening with a “Tribute to the Woodstock Generation,” this year’s event also features the return of the United States Naval Academy Parachute Team, as well as a flour bombing competition, live entertainment and the largest contingent yet of vintage aircraft.
Off-site parking is available at Sussex Academy, with buses and trams serving as shuttles to the airport beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 5. Gates open at 10 a.m.

Boast the Coast/Coast Day Festivities (October 5-6). These complimentary annual events are scheduled for Saturday, October 5 and Sunday October 6, and are sponsored and organized by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment campus in Lewes, respectively.
The Boast the Coast festival on Saturday includes free activities at 1812 Park on the canal, as well as free deck tours of the R/V First State from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., opportunities to visit the Lightship Overfalls and much more

Sunday’s Coast Day festivities adopts the theme of “A Ripple Through Time” for 2019 and emphasizes the ways scientists study changes in our environment over time and the ways Sea Grant extension agents and others work to improve our future.
Activities include an environment-themed treasure hunt, “critter touch tanks” with aquatic animals like horseshoe crabs and dogfish sharks, live music, vendor displays and both a “Crab Cake Cook-Off” and a “Seafood Chowder Challenge.”

Lewes Historical Society Fall Craft Fair (October 5). In conjunction with the Boast the Coast Day Festivities, the Lewes Historical Society will be holdings its fall craft fair this Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
With the historical society complex on Shipcarpenter Street providing the backdrop, dozens of artisans, as well as musicians and vendors, will be on hand in 2019 for this popular historical society fundraiser.
