‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ to open May 7

May 4, 2021

Clear Space Theatre is setting up the podium and pulling out the dictionaries for its musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” opening Friday, May 7.

“It’s super exciting to come back to this musical, as it is quintessentially what makes up the new, contemporary musical! It’s one of those musicals that combines strong characters, great music, and improvisation,” said David Button, Clear Space Theatre artistic director. “There are moments the audience won’t see coming because they can’t see them coming – it’s different every show! You, as an audience member, may even get swept up into the action. Think ‘Avenue Q’ meets ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’ with a spelling bee!”

The musical runs Friday-Sunday, May 7-9, 14-16, and 21-23. Curtain is 7 p.m. for Friday and Saturday shows, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

This small cast of nine actors, plus four to five additional participants that change each night, will keep the audience engaged through storytelling songs encompassing emotions from silly humor to family drama. Returning to the stage are Lorraine Leavel from “Hello, Dolly,” “Carrie” and “Steel Magnolias”; Julia Sturla from “Carrie,” Seussical” and “Sister Act”; Rick Nazzaro from “A Christmas Story,” “Mamma Mia!” and “Clue”; and Christopher Decker from “Into the Woods,” “Christmas Story” and “Guys and Dolls.”

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is sponsored by Jay and Vicki Allen of the Elegant Plate. The 2021 Season at Clear Space is sponsored by Alice and Alfred Willis.

Clear Space Theatre continues to offer socially distanced tables for two or four. To purchase tickets for tables, go to ClearSpaceTheatre.org or call the box office weekdays at 302-227-2270. This musical contains adult humor and is best for people over 13. Masks are required for all patrons inside the theater.
