‘Birds of Passage’ opens at Cinema Art Theater March 16

March 14, 2019

Starting Saturday, March 16, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present the visually striking drama “Birds of Passage,” an epic exploration of the clash between tradition and the pursuit of wealth, embodied in one family’s confrontation with the outside world.

From the Oscar-nominated team behind the genre-defying “Embrace of the Serpent” comes an equally audacious saga centered on the Wayúu indigenous people during a crucial period in recent Colombian history. Torn between his desire to become a powerful man and his duty to uphold his culture's values, Rapayet (José Acosta) enters the drug-trafficking business in the 1970s and finds quick success despite his tribe's matriarch Ursula's (Carmiña Martínez) disapproval. Ignoring ancient omens, Rapayet and his family get caught up in a conflict where honor is the highest currency and debts are paid with blood.

Screening times are 8 p.m., Saturday, March 16; 2 p.m., Sunday, March 17; 2 p.m., Monday, March 18; 3:15 p.m., Wednesday, March 20; and 3 and 6 p.m., Thursday, March 21. Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater, starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.

The mission of the RBFS is promoting cinematic arts and providing education, cultural enrichment, and opportunities for engagement for diverse communities and audiences.
