‘Miss Juneteenth,’ ‘Babyteeth’ screenings to open June 19

June 17, 2020

Rehoboth Beach Film Society announced that ‘Miss Juneteenth” and “Babyteeth” will open Friday, June 19, at the Cinema Art Theater.

Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. Admission for all listed films is $8 for members and $11 for nonmembers.

“Miss Juneteenth” is a soulful drama about two women who come into their own in different ways. Built like a bird, Turquoise Jones (played by Nicole Beharie) is a hardworking single mom who holds down a household, a rebellious teenager, and pretty much everything that goes down at Wayman’s BBQ & Lounge. Turquoise is also a bona fide beauty queen – she was once crowned Miss Juneteenth, a title commemorating the day slavery was abolished in Texas. Life didn’t turn out as beautifully as the title promised, but Turquoise, determined to right her wrongs, is cultivating her daughter, Kai (played by Alexis Chikaeze), to become Miss Juneteenth, even if Kai wants something else. Weekend screen times are 3 p.m., Friday, June 19; 6 p.m., Saturday, June 20; and 4 p.m., Sunday, June 21. Screenings continue through Thursday, June 25.

“Babyteeth” is an Australian comedy-drama based upon a stage play about a terminally ill teen who upsets her parents when she falls in love with a small-time drug dealer. It's her parents' worst nightmare. But as Milla's first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla (played by Eliza Scanlen) soon shows everyone in her orbit including her parents (played by Ben Mendelsohn and Essie Davis) how to live like one has nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life. “Babyteeth” joyously explores how good it is not to be dead yet and how far people will go for love. “Babyteeth” weekend screening times are 4 and 7 p.m., Friday, June 19; 4 p.m., Saturday, June 20; and 3 p.m., Sunday, June 21. Screenings continue through Thursday, July 25.
