‘Porgy and Bess’ opera screening at Cinema Art Theater Feb. 10

February 5, 2020

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present the Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD broadcast of the Gershwins’ modern American masterpiece “Porgy and Bess” at 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10.

The scheduled screening for 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, is sold out. Screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as recorded presentations after being filmed live.

Set in the 1930s, this stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront. “Porgy and Bess” centers on the tragic love story of the crippled beggar Porgy and beautiful Bess, who longs to turn away from her former life as a prostitute and cocaine addict. After a murder, Bess’ abusive partner Crown flees, leaving her at the mercy of a disapproving community and tempted by the seductive drug dealer Sporting Life. Bess strikes up an unlikely relationship with Porgy and gradually finds acceptance on Catfish Row, until a hurricane and the return of Crown change everyone’s lives forever.

David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast, featuring the sympathetic duo of Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles, and an all-star ensemble that includes Janai Brugger, Latonia Moore, Denyce Graves, Frederick Ballentine, Alfred Walker, and Donovan Singletary. Director James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to a setting that is vibrant with music, dancing, emotion, and the heartbreak of its inhabitants.

In addition to the opera performance, the Live in HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or production crew members while showing behind-the-scenes workings. This production is the sixth in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series for the 2019 -20 season.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults; $22 for RBFS members, Met members, and seniors (65+); $15 for students with ID and children 12 and under. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater 30 minutes before the screening.
