‘Carmine Street Guitars’ opening at the Cinema Art Theater May 24

May 22, 2019

Starting Friday, May 24, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present a portrait of a fading New York and a unique way-of-life with the documentary “Carmine Street Guitars.” Lovers of music and New York history will want to see this film.

Once the center of New York bohemia, Greenwich Village is now home to luxe restaurants and clothing stores catering to the nouveau riche. But one shop remains resistant to the encroaching gentrification: Carmine Street Guitars. There, custom guitar-maker Rick Kelly and his young apprentice Cindy Hulej build handcrafted guitars out of reclaimed wood from old hotels, bars, churches and other local buildings. Nothing looks or sounds quite like a Rick Kelly guitar, which is the reason they are embraced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Patti Smith and Jim Jarmusch, just to name a few. Featuring a cast of prominent musicians and artists, the film captures five days in the life of Carmine Street Guitars, while examining an all-too-quickly vanishing city.

Screening times are 6 p.m., Friday, May 24; 3 p.m., Saturday, May 25; 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 28; 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 29; and 6 p.m., Thursday, May 30. Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
