‘Tis the season for the Lewes Christmas Parade

More than 80 entries took part Dec. 1 in the 87th annual Lewes Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. Grand marshals were Mike Clemmer and Wendell Alfred, who were honored for their dedicated service to the community. The following awards were presented:

Most original entry: McAleer School of Irish Dance

Classic car older than 1967: 1. James Mitchell, 1948 Plymouth; 2. Mike Tyler and Pat Torelli, 1962 Austin-Healey

Decorated vehicle, 1968 or newer: 1. Trevor Mees, 1996 Jaguar XJS; 2. Rhon and Carolyn Jernigan, 1970 Triumph TR6; 3. Jim and Cindy Collins, 1976 Triumph TR6

Band: 1. Cape Henlopen High School

Fire company: 1. Dover Fire Department; 2. Rehoboth Beach Fire Co.; 3. Sussex County EMS

Float, commercial: 1. Schell Brothers/Kids Cottage; 2. Lessard Builders; 3. Cape May-Lewes Ferry

Float, community: 1. Lewes in Bloom; 2. Lewes American Legion Post 17; 3. Lewes First Baptist Church

Float, youth organization: 1. Sea Scout Ship 198; 2. Girl Scout Troop 35; 3.Little World International Montessori School

Marching group: 1. Cub Scout Pack 1; 2. SPI Pharma; 3. Coastal Dance Academy

Equestrian: 1. Winswept Stables; 2. Cape Henlopen High School FFA

Clown: 1. Sweet Frog Rehoboth

Best sound (sponsored by John Ellsworth): 1. $40, Schell Brothers/Kids Cottage; 2.$30, Lessard Builders; 3. Girl Scout Troop 499

Honorable mention: Cape Henlopen Army JROTC; Keenote Music Studio; Girl Scout Troop 682; Johnson Orthodontics; Cape Henlopen LEO Club; Boy Scouts Troop 1; The Jefferson School; Beacon Middle School Jr. Honor Society/Jolly Trolley school bus; Shell We Bounce; and Cape Henlopen High School field hockey state champions

Judges were Pres Lee, Lesley Nance and Joe Stewart.

Snow flies from the Schell Brothers/Kids Cottage float, the best commercial entry in the parade.
Lessard Builders has one of the most unique entries in the parade with Lego characters from the Lego Batman movie. The float was a second-place winner in the commercial division.
The Keenotes Music Studio gets in line to perform for the judges. The group won an honorable mention.
The McAleer School of Irish Dance is the most original entry winner.

Lewes in Bloom wins another award – first place in the community float category.
The Coastal Dance Academy elves delight the judges and take home a third-place award.
Johnson Orthodontics staff, family and friends, dressed as characters in the Christmas movie classic, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” won an honorable mention.
Cape Henlopen High School Future Farmers of America – with goats, horses and dogs – win second-place honors in the equestrian division.
The Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club float features a large inflatable dog.
Winswept Stables is the top equestrian entry in the parade.
Enjoying the parade in back are (l-r) Jane Ludwig, Ken Ludwi, Susan Stasi and Jo Bomba and in the front Cathy Varacallo, left, and Paula Fernandes, all visiting from New Jersey.
Sweet Frog of Rehoboth is the top clown in the parade.
Decorated in red, white and blue, Lewes American Legion Post 17’s float takes second place in the community float category.
Shell We Bounce kids have fun along the parade route and win an honorable mention award.
Girl Scout Troop 499 is a third-place winner for best sound.
Cape Henlopen High School’s state champion field hockey team cheers along the parade route on Savannah Road. They received an honorable mention.
Sea Scout Ship 198, with its popular blow-ups, is the top youth float.
It’s not an event without at least one Elvis in the crowd. Coldwell Banker had several “Kings” walking the parade route.
Moose antlers dominate the Moose Lodge/Moosehaven float.
Members of the prize-winning Cape Henlopen High School Band perform for the judges.
