‘Toni Morrison: the Pieces I Am’ opens at Cinema Art Theater Aug. 16

August 14, 2019

Starting Friday, Aug. 16, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will again present “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.” This artful and intimate documentary is a meditation on the late legendary storyteller Toni Morrison as she examined her life, her works, and the powerful themes confronted throughout her literary career.

From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison led an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflected on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature, and her time teaching at Princeton University.

Screening times are 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 16; 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 18; 6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21; and 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22. Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
