24 states represented in Red, White & Blue 5K

John O’Connor bests field of 273 in 17:03
July 5, 2018

A total of 273 runners representing 24 states, the District of Columbia, Republic of South Korea and a few Dreamers, ran the Red, White & Blue 5K July 4 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

Kathy McGuiness, a Rehoboth Beach commissioner and board member of Meals on Wheels, which received the race proceeds, was the honorary starter.

John O’Connor, 17, from Pennington, N.J., was the overall winner in 17:03. O’Connor was joined on the top 5 leaderboard by Jay Boogaert, 15, of Ridgewood, N.J., 17:46; Adam Hallett, 33, of Portland, Maine, 17:46; Kevin Lauer, 19, of Mount Laurel, N.J., 17:48; and Francisco Puac, 33, of Georgetown, 17:51.

The women’s race was won by Athena Manolakos, 32, of Wilmington, in 20:52. She was followed by Andria Barnett, 44, of Wilmington, 21:00; Ava Larkin, 14, of Woodbridge, Va., 21:02; Nina Connors, 12, of Adamstown, Md., 22:29; and Mardiny Ung, 51, of Elizabethtown, Pa., 23:09.

The vista overlooking Rehoboth Bay was beautiful, but the race weather was muggy and hot. The country club had beautiful big trees, but runners did not have it made in the shade because the actual roads are not tree-lined.

Lots of patriotic red, white and blue outfits were in the race, right down to the shoes.

A well-attended one-way Kiddle K started at 7:25 a.m., with the 5K immediately afterward.

The next races2run events on the calendar are the Kelly Fritchman 5K at 8 a.m, Saturday, July 7, at Irish Eyes in Lewes, and the Sunday, July 8 Dewey Beach Liquors 5K, starting at 8 a.m., at Ivy restaurant on Dagsworthy Avenue.
