March 23, 2019

The Coastal Georgetown Branch of the American Association of University Women recognized four young women for their outstanding projects presented at the Sussex County Science Fair March 4.

Addison Dapias and Mackenzie Bogan, sixth grade students at the Milford Central Academy, each received $75 for their project, Moon Buffoons. The project examined the effect of the phases of the moon on the behavior of animals, particularly horses and goats.

For her project, Pedal Power, Lily Manlove, an eighth-grader at Sussex Academy, received an award of $150. The project focused on the relationship between the speed of a bicycle and the amount of electricity produced via a generator attached to the bike that was then used used to recharge an iPhone.

From Sussex Tech, ninth grade student Molly Doppler received a $200 award for Detergent Degradation, a study that examined the effect of different detergents on septic tank water contamination. The women of AAUW congratulate these young women for their creativity, interest and insight.

Recognizing the accomplishments of young women participating in the Sussex County Science Fair each year is in keeping with the mission of the American Association of University Women: To advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.
