Adelene ‘Addie’ Robinson, loved her family

February 22, 2021

Adelene (“Addie”) Robinson, 96, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, at Wilmington General Hospital after a short illness.  She was born Adelene Thelma Foster Oct. 12, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa., the first of 13 children of Frederick Foster and Adelene Winterborne.

Addie lived most of her life in Newark, first on Cleveland Avenue and then on White Clay Creek Road.   She married her high school sweetheart, Eugene (“Dick”) Robinson, when the war ended in 1945.  They were married for 63 years until Dick’s death in 2009 and had six children together.  She is survived by two sons, Rodney (Sue) Robinson of Wilmington and Richard (Barbara McGrath) Robinson of Wallingford, Pa.; her three daughters, Susan (Robin) Russo of Millsboro, Kay (Eric) Beers of Blacksburg, Va., and Elizabeth (William Jr.) Rivers of Wilmington; 15 grandchildren, Adriane (Terry Shelton) Russo, Chiara Russo, Sarah Chapman, Graham (Mitzi) Robinson, Julia (Heather Sharp) Robinson, Walker (Zabrina) Robinson, Garrett Robinson, Walter (Scheherazade) Beers, Martin Beers, Ingrid (Francis) Donnelly, William (Mary) Rivers III, Casey (Kathlyn) Rivers, Mary Rivers, Glennamarie Rivers and Bridgette Rivers; and eight great-grandchildren, Samuel Robinson, Ellen Robinson, Anna Robinson, Jacob Robinson, Benjamin Robinson, Nathan Robinson, William Rivers IV, and Angela Marie Rivers.  Her son, Howard Robinson (Katja), died in 2015.  She is also survived by three sisters, Jane Holden, Mary Conway, and Hazel Immediato; and three brothers, Robert Foster, Ralph Foster and Richard Foster.

Addie will be remembered as a most loving and caring sister, wife, mother and gammy to her large family.  She especially loved all her grandchildren and, most particularly, babies.  She was an accomplished cook and made wonderful memories for us all with her food--whether pre-dawn “hunter’s” breakfasts or grand holiday dinners.  Addie was a woman of remarkable patience and sense of duty.  She was a woman of faith who treated everyone with kindness.  She was the loving heart of our family and will be deeply missed.

The family wishes to thank the staff and community at Forwood Manor for their care while Addie lived there for the last several years.

Due to the pandemic, there will be no services at this time.  Burial will be at Birmingham LaFayette Cemetery in West Chester, Pa.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Addie’s name to Friends of White Clay Creek State Park and send in care of R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711.  To send online condolences, please visit www.rtfoard.com.
