Alfred ‘Al’ E. Gerhard Sr., local handyman

Alfred "Al" E. Gerhard Sr., 71, of Millsboro, passed away Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.

He was born in Lancaster, Pa., Jan. 4, 1946, son of the late Phillip S. Gerhard and the late Mary E. (Flury) Gerhard. Al proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam. He was an automotive mechanic and was also a local handyman in the Long Neck area.

Al was an avid fisherman, enjoyed collecting and putting model cars together, and was a faithful member of the Long Neck United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Gerhard. He is survived by a son, Alfred "Albie" E. Gerhard Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth of Texas; a stepdaughter, Ginger Groff of North Carolina; two brothers, Harry Gerhard of Oregon and Phillip Gerhard of Pennsylvania; two granddaughters, Amanda Lane and Trynda Floyd; and great-grandchildren, Mya Cunningham, Emily Cunningham and Wyatt Lane.

A service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 27, in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. Arrangements by Melson Funeral Services, Millsboro.
