July 26, 2021

Ambrose August “Gus” Hochrein Jr., 81, son of Ambrose August and Geraldine Hochrein of Baltimore, Md., passed away peacefully Saturday, July 17, 2021, of natural causes at his home in Bali, Indonesia.

Gus attended Baltimore Polytech and went on to Rochester University, later earning his Ph.D. in engineering at Catholic University. Gus worked at Eastman Kodak and went on to co-found the engineering firm Dedalian Associates. Gus was an avid tennis player at Aspen Hill Racket Club and enjoyed traveling throughout the world.

Gus is survived by his older brother, Frederick Hochrein of Tampa, Fla.; and his younger sister, Beth and her husband (Gus’s constant lifelong friend) Boyan Mishev of Bowie, Md. He was blessed to have had their love and their support throughout his life.

Gus was predeceased by his youngest son, Andrew August Hochrein of Columbia, Md. On Andrew’s behalf, Gus was instrumental in lobbying the state of Maryland to extend education for special needs students to age 21 and was a member of the Howard County ARC. Gus is survived by his son Ambrose Erik and wife Jennifer Hochrein of Milton, and his son Todd Hochrein and wife Jennifer Hochrein of Charlottesville, Va. Gus was quite proud of his five grandsons, Ambrose Alexander Hochrein, Brent Hochrein, Connor Hochrein, Noah Hochrein, and Jonas Hochrein.

Gus leaves behind his niece Dina Mishev and his nephew Robert and wife Gabby Mishev, as well as his two exceptional grandnieces that he thought of as his granddaughters, Lila Mishev and Maggie Mishev.

It was Gus’ wish to have his ashes spread in his beloved Bali, where his closest friends have honored his death in the local custom. Because his wishes are to have his ashes spread in Bali, a Celebration of Life will be scheduled for family and close friends in the near future.
